What inspired you to launch your business?
I have always enjoyed finding better ways to solve problems, especially when it comes to housing and sustainability. I spent years researching elastomeric roof coatings and saw firsthand how effective they were at extending the life of roofs, improving energy efficiency, and reducing waste. After testing the system on my own properties and seeing the results over several years, I realized there was a real opportunity to bring this solution to homeowners in Central Illinois. SmarTcoaT was born from the belief that we should restore what we can instead of automatically replacing it.
What is your passion?
My passion is improving people's lives through innovation. Whether it is restoring homes, helping families achieve homeownership, or developing sustainable building solutions, I'm motivated by creating practical solutions that make a lasting impact. I enjoy taking ideas that others overlook and finding ways to turn them into something valuable for both people and the environment.
How do you start your day?
I usually start my day by reviewing priorities and planning what needs to be accomplished. Whether I'm working on a roof, meeting with homeowners, or developing new business strategies, I like to begin with a clear plan. I also make time to stay informed about new technologies and ideas because continuous learning has always been important to me.
Favorite local businesses?
Springfield has a strong community of small businesses, and I appreciate the many local companies that invest in our city and support one another. As someone who has worked in the Enos Park neighborhood for many years, I especially admire businesses that are committed to revitalizing our community, creating opportunities, and helping make Springfield a better place to live and work.
What do you deem as success in business?
Success isn't just measured by revenue. For me, success means solving real problems, creating value for customers, and making a positive impact in the community. If a homeowner can save money, improve their home's efficiency, and avoid an unnecessary roof replacement because of SmarTcoaT, that's success. Building something that benefits people while also being environmentally responsible is what matters most to me.
What is your number one piece of advice for business owners?
Be patient and persistent. Some of the best ideas take years to develop and gain acceptance. I've been exploring roofing coatings for residential applications since 2004, and SmarTcoaT is the result of years of testing, learning, and refining the concept. If you believe in what you're building, stay committed, keep learning, and don't be afraid to create the solution yourself when nobody else will.
