Heather Keirs Sunflour Bakery

What inspired you to launch your business?

I am constantly looking to use homegrown and locally grown ingredients in the food we are eating at home. I became obsessed (still am) with what I am feeding my family. It is such a huge process to grow your own food. I started with what I thought was the most straightforward path: bread. We eat bread almost daily, and if you have ever read the ingredient list of bread from the grocery store, what a long list. Yes, I understand that 99% of our food is processed in some way, but I wanted to start somewhere. Now, I know that at least my family is enjoying homemade bread weekly, which has only three ingredients. I am slowly implementing this into other things we eat. And yes, sharing this bread with my community is a very, very small way to pass on the health benefits, but it may resonate or spark other families to focus on what we put into our bodies.

What is your passion?

My passion is showing compassion. Whether it is in my micro bakery or

in my healthcare profession. Every day, I am looking for opportunities to make people feel seen, heard, loved, cared for, and appreciated. In baking, I see people smile, and sharing that moment of enjoyment is a blessing.

How do you start your day?

Unfortunately, extremely early. I strive to bake the freshest product, which means staying up late and getting up very early.

Favorite local businesses?

Hard to pick just one. I absolutely love Little Lincoln's Toy Shop. What stands out to me is the pride in quality service and how the staff makes me feel when I am there and after I leave.

What do you deem as success in business?

When you have customers reach out to you or stop you to give you a kind word or let you know what you are providing brings them joy, especially when shared with friends and family. True gratitude.

What is your number one piece of advice for business owners?

I am not in any position to give business advice at this point in my own journey; however, to any person who has a dream or desire to create their own business, no matter what the size, do it. Go all in, make it happen, no one can make it happen but you. Becoming your own biggest fan first is key; then others will follow. Do not ever give up on yourself.
