Koru Group -Steve Kudwa & Eric Carlson

What inspired you to launch your business?

I started as an engineer and purchased the business in the late 2000s. A bigger vision evolved to include land development in partnership with an architecture firm and contractors who can build spaces from the ground up. I have always loved helping people design and build projects with an eye for detail and customer service.

 What is your passion?

My passion is developing properties that bring a vision to life and serve the community. I’ve built everything from shopping centers to medical centers and churches. I love to be part of the whole process and see it come together.

How do you start your day?

I reflect on my day and what I want to happen. Then, I get my kids ready to head out the door before heading into the office to help clients. I love working with our small office team, which is dedicated heart and soul to their work.

Favorite local businesses?

I love supporting small businesses in the area. I am particularly fond of Top Golf right now.

What do you deem as success in business?

Business success is about balancing work and life. It is also about helping clients balance their vision with a realistic view of what they can achieve. We reach high but keep it within budget and confines of what’s possible for them. Another measure of success is hearing by word-of-mouth from new client referrals who heard we were a dedicated team that works hard for their clients and is servant oriented. That means we are doing our job.

What is your number one piece of advice for business owners?

Be willing to take risks but balance the risks versus rewards. It’s not always best to grow fast if you can’t keep your company culture intact or build positively into your clients and staff. The people who work in the office deserve to be treated with respect as much as the clients. Build a business with heart and hard work - and you can’t fail.
